Time: 12pm, Saturday, Sept. 13th, 2025
Location: 12th Ave & 42nd St (By Circle Line)

Since 1971, representatives from Taiwan have disappeared from the United Nations. Taiwan’s international situation has become increasingly precarious. Starting in the 1970s, overseas Taiwanese began calling on the global community in various ways not to sacrifice Taiwan during the normalization of U.S.-China relations. In 1971, a group of young Taiwanese students secretly planned a protest. They concealed iron chains on their bodies and walked to the gates of the United Nations in New York. Quickly, they tied one end of the chains to themselves and the other end to the UN’s iron gate. This helpless protest was a reflection of Taiwan’s shrinking international space. From that point on, Taiwanese people began decades of being marginalized by the global community.
In the early 1990s, due to public pressure, both the ruling and opposition parties in Taiwan began to pay attention to the voices advocating for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations—especially the United Nations. In 1992, Taiwanese residents in New York established the “Action Committee for Taiwan’s Admission to the United Nations” to coordinate activities during the UN General Assembly. At the time, they promoted the slogan “UN for Taiwan.” They held concerts at Lincoln Center, organized parades with floats through Manhattan, and even used road races to spread their message. In 2007, Taiwan’s Xingang Mazu made a ceremonial tour through New York, accompanied by skywriting planes, pushing the movement to a new peak.
The “Action Committee for Taiwan’s Admission to the United Nations” has been active for over thirty years, with a continued focus on preserving Taiwan’s freedom under the banner “Keep Taiwan Free.” The mission of the Taiwanese people remains unfinished. Our call now includes defending Taiwan’s freedom and democracy, and we will persist until the day Taiwan joins the United Nations. To demonstrate our commitment, several events have been planned this year to loudly express our demands outside the UN.
